Three-point percentage (3P%)
Last reviewed October 13, 2026
Three-point percentage (3P%) is the share of a player's three-point attempts that go in. A three-point attempt is a field goal attempt from beyond the three-point line.
Formula
3P% = three-pointers made ÷ three-pointers attempted × 100
Worked example
A player makes 4 threes on 11 tries.
- 3P% = 4 ÷ 11 × 100 = 36.4%
The same shots count in field goal percentage. If that player also went 3 for 5 on twos, their FG% is (4 + 3) ÷ (11 + 5) × 100 = 43.8%.
What counts
- A shot where the shooter last touched the floor behind the three-point line before the shot.
- A missed three that is blocked. It is still a three-point attempt.
What does not count
- A shot with a foot on the line. That is a two-point attempt.
- A three where the shooter was fouled and missed. The shooter goes to the line, and no attempt is recorded.
Judgment calls
Where is the line? The three-point distance differs between high school, college and professional basketball, and between courts. Count the line on the court you are watching.
Long twos. A shot just inside the line is easy to mistake for a three. When you are unsure, use the official's three-point signal or the score change.
How a statkeeper records it
Mark every three as made or missed at the time of the shot. Threes also count toward field goals, so a separate three-point column is enough to work out 3P% and FG% from one record.
