The basketball scorebook you do not have to look at

A paper scorebook needs your eyes on the page. HoopReads takes the same stats by voice, so your eyes stay on the game.

Track a Game

A scorebook is a good record and a hard thing to keep live. Each play means finding the right row, marking the right box and checking the running count, while the next possession is already under way. Many scorebook apps move that grid onto a screen, so you are still looking down and tapping. With HoopReads there is no grid to fill in while you record. You call the play out loud, and the stat lands on the right player.

Same game, two ways to keep it

Paper or tap-in app

  1. Watch the play
  2. Look down
  3. Find the player
  4. Write or tap
  5. Look up

HoopReads

  1. Watch the play
  2. Say what happened

What you say, what it writes down

“foul on Marcus”
  • #5 · foul +1
“James turnover”
  • #23 · turnover +1
“Isaiah block”
  • #12 · block +1

What carries over from the book

You still get a player-by-player line and team totals. You can still check any number. In HoopReads, tapping a cell shows the exact call behind it, and you fix a mistake by voice or by editing the cell. The full list:

Stats per player

  • Points
  • Rebounds
  • Assists
  • Steals
  • Blocks
  • Turnovers
  • Fouls
  • Makes and misses, with shooting percentages
  • Offensive and defensive rebounds
  • Technical fouls
  • Charges taken
  • Opponent box score
  • Plus/minus
  • Minutes played

Around the stats

  • Live box score. Player and team totals update as each play lands.
  • Corrections with an evidence trail. Fix a stat by voice or by tapping the cell. Every number links back to what was said.
  • Assistant-coach access. Invite an assistant or a student manager to the team so someone else can keep the book.

The official book stays at the table

At a high school game the official scorer keeps the official scorebook, under the rules your state association follows. HoopReads keeps your team’s own stats. It sits beside the official book and does not replace it.

Roster from a scorebook photo

Take a photo of the scorebook page. HoopReads reads the jersey numbers and names into a review list, and nothing saves until you confirm it. The photo itself is never stored.

What to know first

  • HoopReads runs on iPhone. You record from the app during the game.
  • You set up the roster first. HoopReads matches what you say to those players by name, nickname or jersey number.
  • One play per call works best. Say what happened, not the running total.
  • HoopReads keeps your team’s stats. It does not replace the official scorebook kept at the scorer’s table under your state association’s rules.
