Voice basketball stat tracker
A voice basketball stat tracker records game stats from what you say out loud. Here is exactly what HoopReads hears, and what it writes down.
HoopReads is a voice-first basketball stat tracker that lets teams record live game statistics by speaking instead of using a paper scorebook or tapping through an app.

It is a stat tracker you run by talking. You watch the game and call out plays such as a steal, an assist or a foul. The app works out which player did what and adds it to that player’s line in the box score. HoopReads is one of these apps. It is a basketball stat tracker first. Voice is how the stats go in.
Paper or tap-in app

How a spoken play becomes a stat
- You call the play. Press record and say what happened, the way you would tell the bench. One play per call.
- HoopReads finds the player. It matches the name, nickname or jersey number you said against your roster. A bare number that matches a jersey is read as that player, never as a count.
- The play becomes stats. Each call turns into one or more stat changes, one per player per stat. A turnover with a foul on the same player is two changes from one sentence.
- The box score updates. The new stats count right away. There is no approval step in the middle of the game.
- You fix anything later. Tap a box score cell to see the call behind it. Correct it by voice or by editing the cell, and your correction always wins.
Real calls and what they record
Every example below is a case from the test set HoopReads runs against. The quote is what the statkeeper said. The lines under it are the stats it records. Slang works: “picks his pocket” is a steal and “swats it” is a block.
“Carter scored 4”
- #3 · points +4 · needs a pick, not counted yet
“Devin picks his pocket”
- #10 · steal +1
“Isaiah swats it”
- #12 · block +1
“Tyler travels”
- #1 · turnover +1
“Carter reaches in, that's his third”
- #3 · foul +1
“James turns it over, foul on James”
- #23 · turnover +1
- #23 · foul +1
When HoopReads can't tell
If a name doesn’t match anyone on the roster, the play still shows up in the game feed with a one-tap roster picker. It stays out of the box score until you pick the player. If a call adds up to something no single play could do, HoopReads records nothing from it and flags it so you can say it again. It doesn’t guess.
What it records
Stats per player
- Points
- Rebounds
- Assists
- Steals
- Blocks
- Turnovers
- Fouls
- Makes and misses, with shooting percentages
- Offensive and defensive rebounds
- Technical fouls
- Charges taken
- Opponent box score
- Plus/minus
- Minutes played
Around the stats
- Live box score. Player and team totals update as each play lands.
- Corrections with an evidence trail. Fix a stat by voice or by tapping the cell. Every number links back to what was said.
- Assistant-coach access. Invite an assistant or a student manager to the team so someone else can keep the book.
Roster from a scorebook photo
Take a photo of the scorebook page. HoopReads reads the jersey numbers and names into a review list, and nothing saves until you confirm it. The photo itself is never stored.
What to know first
- HoopReads runs on iPhone. You record from the app during the game.
- You set up the roster first. HoopReads matches what you say to those players by name, nickname or jersey number.
- One play per call works best. Say what happened, not the running total.
- HoopReads keeps your team’s stats. It does not replace the official scorebook kept at the scorer’s table under your state association’s rules.
