High school basketball stat tracker

Varsity and JV stats from whoever is on the bench tonight. They call the plays, and the coaching staff gets the box score.

Track a Game

Many high school programs don’t have a full-time statistician. The book goes to a student manager, an assistant or a parent volunteer, and it can change from one night to the next. HoopReads is a basketball stat tracker that new statkeepers can pick up quickly. They say what they see in normal basketball words, and HoopReads turns it into player stats.

Calls a bench can make

“assist Carter”
  • #3 · assist +1
“Andre steal”
  • #34 · steal +1
“Carter reaches in, that's his third”
  • #3 · foul +1

Built around how programs keep stats

  • The coach owns the team. Assistants and student managers join it, so whoever keeps the book that night records into the same team.
  • Stats count as they are called. The coach can check the live box score at a timeout or at halftime.
  • Mistakes are easy to trace. Every number links to the call behind it, so a wrong player on a steal gets fixed in seconds.

What it tracks

Stats per player

  • Points
  • Rebounds
  • Assists
  • Steals
  • Blocks
  • Turnovers
  • Fouls
  • Makes and misses, with shooting percentages
  • Offensive and defensive rebounds

  • Plus/minus
  • Minutes played

Around the stats

  • Live box score. Player and team totals update as each play lands.
  • Corrections with an evidence trail. Fix a stat by voice or by tapping the cell. Every number links back to what was said.
  • Assistant-coach access. Invite an assistant or a student manager to the team so someone else can keep the book.

Your stats, not the official book

The official scorer at the table keeps the official scorebook, under the rules your state association adopts. HoopReads gives your staff its own live stats next to that book. It does not replace it.

Roster from a scorebook photo

Take a photo of the scorebook page. HoopReads reads the jersey numbers and names into a review list, and nothing saves until you confirm it. The photo itself is never stored.

What to know first

  • HoopReads runs on iPhone. You record from the app during the game.
  • You set up the roster first. HoopReads matches what you say to those players by name, nickname or jersey number.
  • One play per call works best. Say what happened, not the running total.
  • HoopReads keeps your team’s stats. It does not replace the official scorebook kept at the scorer’s table under your state association’s rules.
